playroom progress – storage & ABC wall

I have finally made some progress in the playroom! (YAY) After searching and searching, I splurged and went with the Pottery Barn Kids Cameron Storage System during their storage sale. It took some convincing to my better half…but we love it! It’s the perfect size for our wall and our 2 year old, good quality and the compartments are exactly what we needed to get everything organized. The cabinets hold games on one end and art supplies on the other. The drawers are roomy and fit more than I thought they would – we segregated them into large “electronicy” toys, tchotchke toys and stuffed animals. I love that her toys are so easily accessible and not buried in baskets or the closet. I plan to eventually get 4 straw baskets for the cubbies to organize  the blocks, train set, etc.

The  “ABC” wall has also finally made an appearance. The 45″ RIBBA ledges are from Ikea and flashcards were a Christmas gift 2 years ago (I believe from Land of Nod). I had a few RIBBA frames I actually used for the flash cards to see how they would look…they looked awesome until the garage door was accidentally slammed shut (draft) and the frames toppled over (oops). So those don’t work – they are too wide to securely stay on the ledge. I still plan on finding some cheap white frames to give it a more finished look…but so far I love it. All in all it has made the room feel bigger and has provided so much more order. Adeline, who loves having a place for everything and I believe has a minor case of OCD (after my husband) adores it all.

creating a room to play

When we moved into our home there was this odd little “room” right by the kitchen, attached to the family room.  It’s considered a room but isn’t completely closed in as there are two large, half wall cut outs and no door.  It’s separate from the family room, but still sort of part of it.  It is very odd.  But we have kids and therefore, the perfect playroom.  I love it, it’s a great space for the girls to play, stay supervised and keep their toys.

We bought a rug (Lusy Blom Ikea rug) an awesome kids table (Land of Nod) and then it basically got filled up with toys.  It’s an adorable little space, but lacking in some order. I have art hanging on windows, random letters from a set of “ABC” prints on top of some closet trim, animals living on a window ledge and a leftover piece of furniture with 4 storage cubbies filled with randomness.  Every playroom should have the following: FUN, FUNCTION & STYLE (in no particular order).  This room is visible from the moment you walk through our front doors,  it can’t look like a sloppy mess.

A playroom is their space, a place to read, imagine, build and create.  I love a good . . .

  • book nook where books are easily accessible – with a floor pillow, window seat or comfy chair to read
  • play table to color, write or have a tea party
  • wall decor/art display something to inspire and show case all that creativity
  • floor space to play
  • storage to put it all away. . . to organize, provide structure & get the most of those toys

So I really need to work on wall decor & organization, oh and something for the windows.  My plan is to finish the ABC wall project I barely started with my cute ABC prints.  Buy a cork board or something to display art.  I need a better storage system . . . Ikea Expedit has great options, Pottery Barn Cameron Storage Systems have always been my favorite or these knock off Baby Mod Walmart Systems also look like a good alternative. Stay tuned . . .

Alphabet flash card wall

So I have a new playroom project…. for Christmas my little one received an adorable set of “ABC” 8×10 flashcards from Land of Nod.  They are too cute!  I’ve decided to utilize them for some creative wall art.  I have a few ideas of my own…but here are some fun pics I found on the web of what others did.  Look forward to seeing my own finished creation SOON!
