spray painting furniture?

I like to think I’m pretty handy, but it really needs to a quick and fairly easy task in order for it to get done. I often have grand ideas, but once it begins to get complicated I run into problems with patience & time. I admire all you crafty moms out there that paint your own furniture and do your own window treatments.  Maybe one day I will learn how to sew,  but it would be solely for the purpose of possibly making (simple) matching dresses for the girls or a party backdrop. Maybe something like this this, how hard could it be?

Anyways, when we transitioned Adeline’s nursery into a “big girl” room we ended up just buying her a full size bed with guard rails. She sleeps like a queen and loves it. Her bed is quite tall though and she often has quite a bit of trouble climbing up. I spotted this Ikea step stool a while back ago, the perfect cost effective solution, but it needed to be white. So I bought a can of white spray paint and tried my hand at spray painting.

Then my dad stopped over and asked about the priming? sanding? Hmmm, probably should have looked these things up first. All things considered, I got the job done, a feeble first attempt but it looks white (for the most part). Yes, I should have primed it and it needs another coat for sure. But for now it’s good enough for me – “distressed” is in, right? Anyways, here is a better method for spray painting furniture, guess I should definitely go with some priming and sealer int the future.

playroom progress – storage & ABC wall

I have finally made some progress in the playroom! (YAY) After searching and searching, I splurged and went with the Pottery Barn Kids Cameron Storage System during their storage sale. It took some convincing to my better half…but we love it! It’s the perfect size for our wall and our 2 year old, good quality and the compartments are exactly what we needed to get everything organized. The cabinets hold games on one end and art supplies on the other. The drawers are roomy and fit more than I thought they would – we segregated them into large “electronicy” toys, tchotchke toys and stuffed animals. I love that her toys are so easily accessible and not buried in baskets or the closet. I plan to eventually get 4 straw baskets for the cubbies to organize  the blocks, train set, etc.

The  “ABC” wall has also finally made an appearance. The 45″ RIBBA ledges are from Ikea and flashcards were a Christmas gift 2 years ago (I believe from Land of Nod). I had a few RIBBA frames I actually used for the flash cards to see how they would look…they looked awesome until the garage door was accidentally slammed shut (draft) and the frames toppled over (oops). So those don’t work – they are too wide to securely stay on the ledge. I still plan on finding some cheap white frames to give it a more finished look…but so far I love it. All in all it has made the room feel bigger and has provided so much more order. Adeline, who loves having a place for everything and I believe has a minor case of OCD (after my husband) adores it all.

creating a room to play

When we moved into our home there was this odd little “room” right by the kitchen, attached to the family room.  It’s considered a room but isn’t completely closed in as there are two large, half wall cut outs and no door.  It’s separate from the family room, but still sort of part of it.  It is very odd.  But we have kids and therefore, the perfect playroom.  I love it, it’s a great space for the girls to play, stay supervised and keep their toys.

We bought a rug (Lusy Blom Ikea rug) an awesome kids table (Land of Nod) and then it basically got filled up with toys.  It’s an adorable little space, but lacking in some order. I have art hanging on windows, random letters from a set of “ABC” prints on top of some closet trim, animals living on a window ledge and a leftover piece of furniture with 4 storage cubbies filled with randomness.  Every playroom should have the following: FUN, FUNCTION & STYLE (in no particular order).  This room is visible from the moment you walk through our front doors,  it can’t look like a sloppy mess.

A playroom is their space, a place to read, imagine, build and create.  I love a good . . .

  • book nook where books are easily accessible – with a floor pillow, window seat or comfy chair to read
  • play table to color, write or have a tea party
  • wall decor/art display something to inspire and show case all that creativity
  • floor space to play
  • storage to put it all away. . . to organize, provide structure & get the most of those toys

So I really need to work on wall decor & organization, oh and something for the windows.  My plan is to finish the ABC wall project I barely started with my cute ABC prints.  Buy a cork board or something to display art.  I need a better storage system . . . Ikea Expedit has great options, Pottery Barn Cameron Storage Systems have always been my favorite or these knock off Baby Mod Walmart Systems also look like a good alternative. Stay tuned . . .

Our kitchen chandelier is here!

So a few weeks back I did a post on chandeliers in the kitchen… .  Well, we finally picked one and went with the St. Regis from Crystorama.  It’s GORGEOUS.  Even better than I expected.  It sparkles and shines and lights up the whole kitchen.  Not to mention we feel like royalty during dinner! Here are a few pics from the night we finally got it up…(right in time for the holidays).

So pretty…makes me smile every time I sit down to eat (its the little things…). :-)   Now, kitchen project #2 – window treatments.  I think roman shades…flat, relaxed? white or patterned?? hmm….

Master Bath – roman shades

I’m currently working on some window treatments for our master bath as the paper shades are just not cutting it anymore (and yes, they are being help up by packaging tape).  I found someone to custom make new “cordless” inside mount roman shades, I’m very excited about it!  Here are some of the fabric options I have chosen (all from Premier Prints) as they have decent options and honestly, you can’t beat the price.  I’ve decided to go with the second one from the left (style Traditions – Cloud/Linen) – I think this fabric will provide a nice contrast against all the white but not compete with it, just provide a softer overall look.

We had to completely remodel our master bath due to some serious damage/plumbing/water leaking issues before we moved into our home last spring.  I fell in love with “Mrs. Limestone’s” bathroom from a brooklyn limestone in progress (check out her beautiful home!)  I am obsessed with that marble/subway tile look (did the same thing in my kitchen) and used her bathroom as my inspiration.   Here are some sneak peaks of what we have done so far.

Basketweave marble floors, Restoration Hardware sconces, Gatco mirrors, chrome Moen Waterhill faucets/rain head shower, dark chocolate cabinets from Lowes, white subway tile, Ikea PAX closet system

kitchen remodel

So we didn’t have much to begin with as you can see in the “before” – but we kept the same layout as the original kitchen and just added everything in.  I LOVE white marble, subway tile kitchens!  However, we were remodeling an entire house and not just the kitchen so I had to do the best I could with a limited budget.  We still have ways to go but here is what we have so far!

  • Cabinets – Lowes Diamond
  • Appliances – Samsung Fridge, Bosch Dishwasher and range (Integra slide-in)
  • Counter – Vermont Danby Montclair Marble
  • Hardware – RH bistro
  • Backsplash – subway tile, Lowes
  • Faucet – Delta Leland
  • Sink – Ticor stainless undermount – overstock
  • Barstools – Ikea
  • Paint in kitchen – Sherwin Williams Dry Dock
